More than fifteen hundred young dancers have spent at least one summer session or semester with us over the past ten years. The following bulletins are just those we’ve managed to keep track of. Madison Hoke and Kelvin Vu joined the Batsheva Ensemble in December 2013.

Megan and Shannon Kurashige's company Sharp & Fine premiered the evening-length work "Queen of Knives" featuring SFCD alumni Katharine Hawthorne, Shannon Leypoldt, and Carson Stein, as well as Megan and Shannon at Z Space in December 2013 .

Sarah Lyman joined Ate9 in the spring of 2013.

Shane Scopatz joined the Batsheva Ensemble in the fall of 2012.

Thibaut Eiferman joined Ballet BC in the fall of 2012.

Aidan DeYoung joined Smuin Ballet in the fall of 2012.

Megan and Shannon Kurashige's company Sharp & Fine premiered its first piece "A Thousand Natural Shocks" with dancers Carson Stein, Kelvin Vu, Josianne Fleming, Sarah Lyman, as well as Megan and Shannon at Z Space in July 2012 .

Malinda LaVelle's company Project Thrust performed "Urge" at ODC Theater and Z-Space in July 2012 with dancers Emily Jones, Emmaly Wiederholt, Julia Hollas, Kelvin Vu, and Madelyn Biven.

Alexandra Freeman joined Le Moulin Rouge in Paris in the spring of 2012.

Emmaly Wiederholt launched the blog stanceondance.com, home of "The Bunion", dance-related essays, interviews, poetry, artwork, and more in March 2012.

Megan and Shannon Kurashige, Carson Stein and Katharine Hawthorne performed with Liss Fain Dance in the world premiere of "The Water is Clear and Still" at Z Space in May 2012.

Sarah Wood and Josianne Fleming joined LevyDance in the spring of 2012.

Maggie Stack joined ODC in January 2012.

Megan and Shannon Kurashige and Carson Stein joined Liss Fain Dance in May 2011.

Julia Hollas, Maggie Stack, and Emmaly Wiederholt performed in Katie Faulkner’s piece We Don’t Belong Here at outdoor venues in San Francisco’s Union Square and Yerba Buena Lane in October. (posted November 2011)

Arolyn Williams has been promoted to Demi-Soloist at Ballet West. She was featured in Dance Magazine as one of their 2010 “On the Rise” picks. She has performed Jiri Kylian’s Sinfonietta and was coached in the role of Titania in Frederick Ashton’s The Dream by Anthony Dowell. (Posted November 2010)

Joy Prendergast performed in the premiere of Alex Ketley’s “Please Love Me”  at the HeadlandsCenterfor the Arts and the San Francisco International Arts Festival. (Posted November 2010)

Malinda LaVelle launched her own project-based company called Project THRUST, and completed a Resident Artist Workshop at The Garage. The work she developed with dancers Emily Jones, Joy Prendergast, Mei-Ling Murray, Toni Lum, Maggie Stack, Emmaly Wiederholt, Julia Hollas and Madelyn Biven met with considerable acclaim when performed at The Garage and Studio Gracia. Malinda will be a featured choreographer in the Conservatory’s November Dancemakers’ Forum. (Posted November 2010)

…. Emmaly Wiederholt was awarded an internship with the San Francisco Bay Guardian to write about dance. She maintains a blog at danceinthebayarea.blogspot.com and works with Bay Area choreographers Alyce Finwall, Christine Cali, and Malinda LaVelle. (Posted November 2010)

Caitlin Ritt is a Master Trainer at Sports Club L.A., working with clients on injury rehabilitation, weight loss, and pre- and post-natal conditioning. She also works with dancers on cross-training. (Posted November 2010)

… Still based in New York, Emery LeCrone is dancing for Miro Magloire’s New Chamber Ballet and for The Metropolitan Opera in the productions of The Magic Flute, Aida, and Turandot. She is also choreographing, and will premiere, new works this season for The Columbia Ballet Collaborative, the New Chamber Ballet, and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. (posted November 2009)

… In her senior year at U.C Irvine, Krystal Matsuyama traveled to Berlin for two weeks in February 2008 as rehearsal assistant to former Frankfurt Ballet & Joffrey Ballet principal Jodie Gates who was commissioned to set a new work on StaatsBallet. (Posted April 2008)

… After performing with Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company in its debut at New York City Center in October 2007, Emery LeCrone joined the New Chamber Ballet in New York City. In addition to her dancing, Emory has also choreographed works performed by North Carolina Dance Theater as well as at the Chautaqua Summer Gala, Ballet Builders and the New York City Ballet for Greensboro Ballet Gala Stars at Night. Emily Hite received her B.A. from Stanford in April 2007. In her final quarter she received a grant to stage Amy Seiwert’s ballet, The Gift, in a township outside Cape Town, South Africa. In May 2007 she traveled to China to perform with the Sacramento Ballet, where she danced full-time from 2000-2003. She now lives in San Francisco, is a member of Hope Mohr Dance, writes for In Dance, and misses the Conservatory students she chaperoned last summer. (Posted April 2008)

Jacqueline Burnett will begin dancing with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in January 2008 while concurrently completing her Ailey/Fordham B.F.A. degree. (Posted December 2007)

… currently visiting Munich, Germany, where she is working with Thomas McManus, Chloe Felesina will begin dancing with Dance Works Chicago in January 2008. (Posted December 2007)

Chloe Felesina, Hallie Hunt, Malinda LaVelle, and Toni Lum performed with The Foundry in a multimedia work named The Translation Project that was a collaboration among various artists exploring contemporary Iranian poetry. The work aimed to connect the myth of Icarus with the migration of Iranians, and the solitary journey of the artist/migrant in the search for artistic freedom. The November performances were held at Theater Artaud. (Posted December 2007)

Katrena Cohea is teaching dance at San Francisco’s Community Youth Center in a program she has helped build from 30 to 150 children—60 of whom she is marshalling in the Center’s second season of The Nutcracker. (Posted December 2007)

Rachel Meyer performed as a guest artist with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet in The Nutcracker during November/December 2006 and with Utah Ballet as a ballet major at the University of Utah in April 07. She returned to SFCD for her second summer intensive in June/July 2007, doing the William Forsythe Project, and then spent July/August at the Northwest Professional Dance Project, performing new choreographic works by Lauri Stallings and Cayetano Soto. She is currently dancing with Utah Regional Ballet as she continues to work toward her B.F.A. degree. (Posted November 2007)

Gabrielle Zucker has accepted a position with the San Diego Opera Ballet to perform in the production of Tannhauser in the Spring of 2008. (Posted November 2007)

… in her second year at Juilliard, Chelsea Ainsworth is currently rehearsing a new piece by choreographer Adam Houglan as part of the Conlin Project—for which three guest choreographers were invited to create works with music that was lost during the Holocaust—and another new piece by a third year student. She is also preparing for benefit shows to be performed in December and January: Project Love, meant to raise awareness and money for the Wildfires in California, and Art-In-Action; and she is active with a group known as ASTEP (Artists Striving To End Poverty), working to raise awareness of Aids and Poverty in the U.S., India and Africa. Claire Hancock (B.F.A. University of Arizona) received her M.A. in European Dance Theatre from the Laban Centre in London in October 2007. During the year she spent in Europe, her many projects included original research conducted in Stockholm on Birgit Cullberg, a video installation called Prototype, and her final solo piece Chiaroscuro—a collaboration with lighting designer/sound engineer Chan Vi. She also performed regularly in venues of all sizes throughout London with poet/actress Eisha Karol in a show called Sea Suite: Ultraviolet, a multi-media performance incorporating spoken word, dance, film, music and classical Indian vocals. Claire just recently returned to Tucson to pursue an M.F.A in Dance at the University of Arizona’s School of Dance. (Posted November 2007)

Krystal Matsuyama, together wih Liane Aung, Janelle Junio, Shannon Kurashige, and Jenna Otter, all at UC Irvine, worked with Georg Reischl (current member of the Forsythe Company) in a Forsythe Workshop during the Dance Film Festival. In February 2008, Krystal will accompany former Frankfurt Ballet & Joffrey Ballet principal Jodie Gates for two weeks as rehearsal assistant on her commission with the StaatsBallet Berlin.

… at the Ailey School, Moo Kim was one of just a few students selected to perform with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Memoria during the company’s recent New York City Center season. He also recently choreographed his first Modern piece for Fall Fest, performed by Sara Genoves-Sylvan and Fana Fraser, which was very well received. Moo is working very hard and is enjoying himself thoroughly as he approaches graduation in May 2008.

… on track to complete her B.F.A. at the University of Utah in the Spring of 2008, Alexandra Freeman has been busy at Utah Ballet preparing for the upcoming fall show in November. She has been cast in the following leading roles: the principal in Carole Iwasaki’s Pas de Combien?, the solo variation Ryein Michael Smuin’s The Tempest, and soloist in Paquita. She has also been invited by Aspen Santa Fe Ballet to return for a second season of The Nutcracker. (Posted November 2007)

… now in her senior year at SUNY Purchase, Rachel Talley performed the Bill T. Jones piece D-Man in the Waters last spring. She spent one month during each of the past two summers in Burgos, Spain with Dance International, working with international choreographers as part of a program created by Kazuko Hirabayashi. … having graduated from the Universityof Arizona in the spring of 2007, Bryn Chafin moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where she is currently working as a ballet and modern instructor with Journey Dance Company and Academy in Santa Rosa. In addition to preparing students for an upcoming holiday show, she is closely involved with the artistic directors in planning the organization’s development. (Posted November 2007)

Reiko Ushimura is currently rehearsing her role as Sugar Plum Fairy for ten upcoming performances of The Nutcracker at Mountain West Ballet in Sandy, Utah. In March she performed with the University of Utah’s Ballet Ensemble, and in May she choreographed and performed a group piece for the graduation performance. In September she choreographed and performed (wearing a Japanese kimono) a solo mixing ballet with Japanese style of dance as part of a showcase. (Posted November 2007)

… now in her second year as a Dance major at the Universityof Arizona, Jessica Neal is about to begin working on choreography with jazz teacher Susan Quinn and learning Balanchine’s Serenade with guest artist Leslie Peck. Last summer, she danced with a small professional company in Dallas called Soul Escape. (Posted November 2007)

… at the Ailey School Sara Genoves-Sylvan recently had the opportunity to perform one of the lead roles in Landscape, a piece by choreographed by Alvin Ailey in the 70’s, set by Elizabeth Roxas on the B.F.A. junior class for a studio showing. She also performed in Moo Kim’s piece for the fall student choreography performance (it was his first choreographic endeavor and was very well received). Sara was also among a small group of students—which included Jacqueline Burnett, Fana Fraser and Moo Kim—selected by audition to perform Memoria, a piece by choreographed by Alvin Ailey as a tribute to the late Joyce Tristler, performed by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater its New York City Center season. … at Florida State University this semester, Sarah Pomarico has already performed in the fall M.F.A. concert (the thesis concert for graduating Masters of Fine Arts students) and is currently performing in two student pieces that are part of Days of Dance. (Posted November 2007)

Alicia Delgadillo has kept busy lately rehearsing her roles as Sugar Plum Fairy and Dew Drop Fairy in The Nutcracker production of the Piedmont Dance Conservatory, while completing applications and preparing audition solos for Juilliard, NYU, Boston Conservatory, Fordham, SUNY Purchase, and Dominican College. … at the University of Utah, Michelle Thieme is performing solo parts in Paquita and Michael Smuin’s The Tempest with Utah Ballet in November. She’s also teaching creative movement for adult classes at the new Salt Lake Ballet Conservatory, and fundraising to help Utah Ballet complete an exchange program with Kyunghee University in South Korea during spring break next semester. Michelle was recently interviewed by the University of Utah student newspaper about her dance experience in Amsterdam last year. (Posted November 2007)

Katy Felsinger just returned from an 11-day trip performing in China, organized by the non-profit organization Dance Kids of Monterey County. 25 dancers ages 10-17 (together with as many parents) toured Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai, and went to Sias International University in the Henan Province, where they performed for student audiences of up to 8,000 people! Katy had a fantastic experience and loved learning about Chinese culture and watching Chinese dancers perform. She is currently rehearsing for her role as Clara in Dance Kids’ upcoming performances of The Nutcracker. (Posted November 2007)

Liz Liles is currently studying in the dance program at Sacramento State University, focusing on modern dance. She is hoping to shake up what she feels could be a more vibrant Sacramento dance scene by organizing some sort of performance art dance company/space. (Posted November 2007)

… on track to graduate from Juilliard with a B.F.A. in Dance in May 2008, Buddy Valdez performed a reflection concert in September 2006 on work previously performed in Spain with Dance International directed by Kazuko Hirabayashi at the Ailey Citigroup Theater in NYC. In December 2006 he performed with The Juilliard Dance Ensemble in the New Dances concert with a commissioned piece by Doug Varone entitled The Constant Shift of Pulse, before attending SFCD’s annual New Year’s Workshop. In March 2007 he performed with The Juilliard Dance Ensemble in in Jiří Kylián’s Soldier’s Mass as part of the Spring Repertory concert. In June 2007 he attended a professional workshop SpringBoard Danse Montréal with Alexandra Wells and performed works by Nacho Duato and Ghislaine Doté. During July/August 2007 he attended the SFCD Summer Intensive Program and performed works by Jiri Kylián (set by Glenn Edgerton), Alex Ketley, and Christian Burns. During September and October 2007 he attended a two-week workshop on repertory by Mats Ek with Ana Laguna, and another workshop with Kevin Irving on Nacho Duato repertory. In November 2007 he attended a master class with Ohad Naharin and was coached on Naharin’s Echad. Buddy is currently preparing to perform a commissioned piece by Robert Battle with The Juilliard Dance Ensemble as part of the "December Dance Creations/Conlan Project" concert. He is also actively auditioning for dance companies in North America and Europe. (Posted November 2007)

Sammi Rosenfeld received three awards (including “most innovative choreography”) for a piece she choreographed that was performed at the 2006 WAISDEA (Washington Area Independent Dance Education Association) Dance Festival. She is currently heading her school’s dance company “Fata Morgana”, and is doing an apprenticeship of sorts with Dana Tie Soon Burgess & Company. (Posted November 2007)

Janelle Junio resumed her studies as a dance major at University of California Irvine (UCI) in September 2007 after attending SFCD’s Summer Intensive Program. At UCI, Janelle and fellow SFCD alumni Krystal Matsuyama, Liane Aung, Jenna Otter and Shannon Kurashige are part of an esteemed modern dance ensemble (called “Etude”) directed by Donald McKayle. The ensemble recently performed in the Laguna Dance Festival (in a program that included Complexions Dance, ABT, and Ballet Flanders, among others) and in the Fall for Dance Festival at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. … after attending the 3-week Northwest Professional Dance Project (NWPDP) 2007 in Portland, Oregon, Andrea Parson joined the NWPDP Company under the artistic direction of Sarah Slipper. … earlier this year, which is her senior year at UIUC (the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), Ellen Deutch choreographed a piece about long division, titled P.447-450, #1-29 odd, for the university’s New Year 2007 Workshop that was chosen for performance in April as part of Studiodance 2 and was very well received. She also choreographed for the recently released movie Press Start, which enjoyed resounding success at its world premiere in October at the Virginia Theater in Champaign, Illinois. She was given two screen credits for the movie--"Dance Choreographer" and "Sam Dance Double"—and is mentioned in two of the three commentary tracks included on the DVD’s Special Features. Last April, Ellen performed at the Krannert Art Museum and the Boneyard Arts Festival as a member of Kirstie Simson’s student improv ensemble in Champaign-Urbana. She is currently choreographing her senior thesis group piece for performance next spring, working with compositional tools used by Fred Astaire in his movie musicals. (Posted November 2007)

… now a freshman in the dance department at Loyola Marymount University, Nika Clark is working with teachers Paige Porter (jazz), Damon Rago (modern), Denise Scheerer (tap), Denise Leitner (jazz), and Scott Heinzerling and Tekla Kostek (ballet). She is preparing to perform a jazz finale piece and a tap piece for a concert in late November/early December, and is also choreographing a piece which she hopes will make it into the spring student show. … while pursuing her bachelor degree at SarahLawrenceCollege, Hadar Ahuvia has collaborated this past year in the creation of new works with Christian Burns and with fellow student Ashley Byler. Last December she took class with Kibbutz Contemporary Company and attended a Pina Bauch workshop conducted by Fernando Suels. In April she attended a master class conducted by Ohad Naharin. … as a member of the University of California Irvine (UCI) Etude Ensemble, Liane Aung recently participated in fundraising/promotion activities for CaDance—renamed the Laguna Beach Dance Festival—directed by Jodie Gates. This involved performing in an outdoor concert and at the Laguna Beach HIgh School, sharing the stage with dancers from Complexions and the Royal Ballet of Flanders. Liane just completed the faculty dance concert auditions, and has begun rehearsing for two Dance Vision pieces: Syncopated Gambol by Donald McKayle and a modern piece with Loretta Livingston, Renee Harris and other guest choreographers. She participated in a William Forsythe improv workshop following the UCIDance Film Festival, and is currently preparing for the upcoming New Slate graduate concert in December. … at the University of Utah, Vinnie Jones recently joined the Character Dance Ensemble and was selected to be one of four students to tour with the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company performing the Russian Dance in The Nutcracker (for which she was paid). … during 2007 Chloe Mollis-Mcbride performed at Seattle’s Moore Theatre in BishopBlanchetHigh School’s production of the musical Grease. She is in the tap company SoleSound, and enjoyed the honor of performing for legendary masters of tap and lindy hop Frankie Manning, Norma Miller and Chester Whitmore at Seattle’s Century Ballroom in August. She is currently preparing for her roles as Harlequin Doll, Spanish, and part of the Waltz of the Flowers in Cornish’s upcoming performances of The Nutcracker. (Posted November 2007)

… in her senior year at Boston Conservatory, Jennifer Radcliffe has been deeply immersed in improvisation classes and workshop/rehearsals with improv teacher Olivier Besson. She will be performing a solo and trio in a structured improv piece called A Time Upon Once that will be performed in mid-November at the Boston Conservatory Mainstage. She plans to spend the spring semester attending auditions for various (primarily modern) dance companies. (Posted November 2007)

Fana Fraser is very excited to be traveling to the Netherlands with the Ailey School to take part in the Holland Dance Festival. She will also be performing (as one of just a few students selected) in Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Memoria, a work choreographed by Mr. Ailey as a tribute to his friend Joyce Trisler, at New York City Center. Jamie Melaragno is in her second season as a trainee with Bodiography Contemporary Ballet. Last season she was in the company’s production of Kaleidescope and this season (following her participation in the SFCD Summer Intensive Program) she just finished performing in the work Multiplicity. She is already preparing for an April 2008 show featuring the pieces Solace and Bound. As she approaches her high school graduation, Jamie has already begun applying/ auditioning for colleges. Cortney Mild just earned an Honors B.F.A. in Ballet Performance, Teaching, and Character Dance from the University of Utah, and joined Chattanooga Ballet as dancer and instructor. She performed in Alan Arnett’s Cruel Sun and Frank Hay’s Creation for Chattanooga Dances, a performance hosted by the Tennessee Association of Dance. She will soon perform as Rose Queen, Snow Queen, and a party mom, as well as choreograph Polichinell dance for Chattanooga Ballet’s The Nutcracker. In October 2007 she presented research on dance as cross-training for athletes at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science Conference in Canberra, Australia. … a sophomore in the Lines Ballet/Dominican University BFA program, Nichole Beeks is rehearsing for upcoming winter performances to be held at Marin Ballet. She will be performing a section of Koto, choreographed by Alonzo King, and a new piece by Arturo Fernandez. Nichole choreographed for the musical Gideon’s Dream which was performed in September at DominicanUniversityand at Kanbar Hall (SFJCC). The musical, based on the true story of Rabbi Gideon Sorokin, is about the life of an 8-year-old boy during the holocaust and how his family managed to escape the Nazis. (Posted November 2007)

… at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), Rhiannon Talley performed the Paquita demi-solo in Body and Soul last year and the roles Tigerlily, Violet, and Bird in Alice in Wonderland this year. She is currently taking a full schedule of ballet, point, modern and jazz classes, and will soon be rehearsing for other upcoming performances. (Posted November 2007)

Kristine Anderson is student-director of University Dance Theatre at San FranciscoStateUniversityfor the 2007/08 school year. She is also dancing with Christine Germain and Dancers, performing at Counterpulse in November 2007, and will be doing a site-specific piece about the tragedy in Bhopal, India in December 2007. Dallas McMurray joined the Mark Morris Dance Group as an apprentice in July 2006. His first performance at Lincoln Center was in a new work entitled Mozart Dance. Arolyn Williams joined Utah’s Ballet West as an apprentice in July 2006, debuting in the humorous Vespri on tour in Aspen, Colorado. Raychel Diane Weiner began performing as a corp de ballet member with St. Louis Ballet, artistic director Gen Horiuchi, in September 2006.
