Innovative International Dance Films, April 2012
In celebration of Bay Area Dance Week, the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance presented a program of provocative dance films curated by Charlotte Shoemaker. Showcasing some of the best dance created both for and from the camera, this varied program included films from New Zealand, Denmark, Italy, France, the Netherlands, UK, and US.
The program—which included the films listed below—featured a rich kaleidoscope of human behavior,
expressed through the combination of compelling dance and the skillful use of camera, editing, and sound to
create unique works of cinematic art.
île 2 [Island 2] (Italy/France, 5 min. directed by Simona da Pozzo) is a subtle, hypnotic duet of two men, each constrained in their own circumscribed space, but nevertheless playing off each other.
Break (New Zealand, 14 min. directed and choreographed by Shona McCullagh) A woman makes the painful decision to leave her son and partner. The camera intensifies their dance and articulates their separation.
Little Lieutenant (USA, 7 min. directed by Henry Hills and choreographed by Sally Silvers) is made from the viewpoint of an experimental filmmaker. This unique cabaret of dance, archival footage, and cartoons moves to the music of Kurt Weill and John Zorn.
Exit (UK, 9 min. directed by Clara van Gool and choreographed by Jamie Watton) takes place in a pedestrian tunnel under the Thames where people sheltered during the WWII bombing raids. Time becomes fluid, whirling the performers through the tunnel and across the boundary between then and now.
Mänsklist Mönster [Human Patterns] (Denmark, 11 min. choreographed and directed by Klara Elenius) is a fraught visit between two young women, their idiosyncratic natures reverberating with the power lines outside and revealing the eccentricities and fears that we usually hide from ourselves and others.
Reservaat [a preserved wild space] (Netherlands, 9 min. directed by Clara van Gool) Embedded in a brooding woodland, two women dance a tango in which they become an intense and mysterious four legged furry being.
Höhenluft [Mountain Air] (Netherlands, 25 min. directed by Annick Vroom and choreographed and danced by the Hans Hof Ensemble) Waltzing, coughing, flirting, joking, and breathing fresh air in a Swiss tuberculosis sanitarium of the 1920's. This colorful and sober short has the lush production values of a feature film.
