Innovative International Dance Films
As a cornerstone event of Bay Area National Dance Week, SFCD presented Dance/Screen: Innovative International Dance Films, curated by Charlotte Shoemaker in our facilities. This varied and provocative program showcased some of the best dance being created both for and from the camera. Three of these films have won numerous awards at international dance film festivals. The program was free and open to the public as part of an annual event that brings together dance lovers in one of the largest and most active dance communities in the country.
Program:
Nora (Mozambique/USA/UK, 35 minutes)
Alla Kovgan and David Hinton directed, and Nora Chipaumire choreographed this visually stunning, colorful dance biography with a powerful emotional center.
DecSurveillance (UK, 9 minutes)
Directed by Caroline Bridges and Dom Breadmore, and choreographed by Caroline Bridges, this is a chase witnessed by surveillance cameras in an office block after-hours.
Dos Ambientes (Argentina, 15 minutes)
Choreographed and directed by Rodrigo Pardo. Cleverly shot in his tiny apartment so the limited space becomes a crucial part of exuberant action that includes an early morning tango in the bathroom.
Insyn (Denmark, 15 minutes)
Choreographed and directed by Klara Elenius, "Insyn" takes place in a dark suburban house
where dream and reality interact in surprising and idiosyncratic ways.
Azucar (France/Italy, 4 minutes)
Choreographed and directed by Simona da Pozzo, "Azucar" is a subtle underwater dance full of foreboding and mystery.
The Body Electric #1 (Italy/UK, 4 minutes)
Directed by Davide Pepe and choreographed by Miriam King, this is a dance of movement and light, exploding in nervous gestures and flashes.
