Former dancer with Frankfurt Ballet, authorized by the choreographer William Forsythe to teach his Improvisational Technologies and to set his choreography on approved dance companies; very active internationally as an independent choreographer and freelance artist

Biography

Born in Vicenza, Italy, Alessio studied ballet with Maria Berica Dalla Vecchia before going on to the Académie de Dance Classique Princesse Grace in Monte-Carlo (from which he graduated) and the Ecole Atelier Rudra Béjart in Lausanne.

He also studied music at the Music Conservatory A. Pedrollo in Vicenza and the Académie de Musique Prince Rainier III in Monte-Carlo. He joined the composers of the new school of music “Tricordale” under the direction of Maestro Francesco Valdambrini, and has composed music for his choreographic works.

Alessio danced and choreographed with Béjart Ballet Lausanne, directed by Maurice Béjart, and Ballet de l’Opéra National de Lyon, directed by Yourgos Loukos, and danced with Ballet Frankfurt, directed by William Forsythe, from 1999 to 2002. He still performs periodically as guest artist with The Forsythe Company, and is authorized by Mr. Forsythe to teach his Improvisational Technologies and to adapt and set certain of his works.

He choreographed for the Festival de Cannes in 1997, Ballet de l’Opéra National de Lyon and Copenhagen International Ballet in 1998, Ballet Frankfurt in 2000/2001, Ballet Freiburg Pretty Ugly in 2001, Cadance Festival in Den Haag, Holland 2002. In 2003 he choreographed for the Festival Modafe in Seoul and the 11322 Project in Tokyo, and performed with Jo Kanamori and Sawako Iseki.

Residing in Japan since 2003, Alessio has been a freelance artist involved in various kinds of endeavors. In 2004 he choreographed and performed for Dance and Media Japan, Intercommunication Center Tokyo, Dance Biennale Tokyo and Aichi Arts Center in Nagoya. In 2005 Aichi Arts Center in Nagoya commissioned him to choreograph, direct and perform Béla Bartók’s one act opera “Bluebeard’s Castle”. Also in 2005, he performed his work “Ritrovare/Derivare” with the Noh actor Reijiro Tsumura at the Venice Biennale, choreographed for the dance company Noism 05 in Niigata and collaborated with Michael Schumacher and the composer Thom Willems at the New National Theater in Tokyo. In 2006 he collaborated with the sculptor Anton Himstedt in Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte Münster, presented his video dance “Map“ at the Dance Camera West Film Festival in Los Angeles and at the Cinedans Film Festival in Amsterdam.

In 2006 he choreographed as part of the Ljubljana Festival and performed in Korea for Seongnam Dance Festival, Daegu Art Cultural Center and Seoul Dance Biennale. In 2007 he performed as guest dancer and worked as assistant choreographer in São Paulo with the dance company Siameses, directed by the choreographer Mauricio de Oliveira, and performed in the installation “Additive Inverse” by William Forsythe for the opening program of the building inside Tokyo Midtown by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando 21_21 Design Sight, in collaboration with The Miyake Issey Foundation. In 2007 he was invited to perform in China at the 4th Guangdong Modern Dance Festival, where he choreographed and exhibited his visual art work as part of the Konbu Project at Ycam Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media.

In 2008 Alessio performed in Tokyo the work “Transparent Labyrinth”, choreographed by Akira Kasai on “The Art of Fugue” of Johann Sebastian Bach, played in performance by the pianist Yuji Takahashi. He performed “triple-zone” by the choreographer Regina van Berkel as part of the Holland Dance Festival and the Steps#11 International Dance Festival Switzerland. He was commissioned by the Brasilian dance company São Paulo Conpanhia de Dança to choreograph and direct “Polígono”, a work created for the opening program of the company, based on the “Musical Offering” of Johann Sebastian Bach, revisited by the Brussels chamber music group Het Collectief.

Alessio’s first experience with the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance was during the summer of 2008, when he was sent as Mr. Forsythe’s representative to teach his Improvisational Technologies.
